Right now the kids are playing in the garage.
Don't ask me why.
Today, the garage is a magical place where there are new smells, new adventures, and apparently a scary dragon who needs to be slain with the broom.
My grown up mind is thinking - dirty feet and bikes out of place.
But, I'm letting it go.
I'm letting kids be kids.
Why is this such a hard lesson for me to learn?
I was a kid once, right?
Of course, our kids need guidance and boundaries, but sometimes I find myself trying to rule and contain the chaos they brought to my life instead of letting that chaos turn into fun and learning.
Sometimes it's okay to let the boys play cars on the deck in their underwear.

You probably wonder if my kids ever wear clothes. We've had a lot of underwear pictures lately. Maybe I'm letting go a little too much ;)
It's okay to let my little guy make a lego city on my kitchen counter and leave it there for a couple days.

Counter space is highly overrated.
It's okay to have a movie party

in our pajamas and eat popcorn at 9:00 in the morning.
It's okay to let go sometimes and let my kids be kids . . . . and people.
They are people here to live their lives.
They aren't just my life experience.
They are having little life experiences of their own.

Right now it's the experience of rummaging through the garage and chasing each other with old paint rollers.
They've gotta be learning a lot from that, right?

Kristin! Chris looks SO much like a Catmull in that Lego shot! Oh my goodness!
I know what you mean (well not really since I don't have kids) but I will probably be the same way. It's hard to let kids be kids. At least you are realizing it and letting go :) Good job!
are you kidding? the garage is the FAVORITE place for my kiddos to play lately. Carina will coax Danna into opening the door for her and then they're off into whatever disgusting and random thing they can find. They also love to play in the car. I've started just letting them go crazy. Well, until I hear the garage door opening, then I know they can get out. . .
You are such a great mom!! They are lucky to have you!
That is so funny! Lucy, Meg and Carlie LOVE the garage too! I like it because it's close enough to the kitchen that I can still hear them while I mop the floor. They ride bikes and play with all the toys and clothes in the give away pile.
I cannot get over how CUTE Andy is!
Love this post... and hey, at least you have a garage for them to play in, right? How awesome is that?
This post makes me feel a little guilty. I'm always squashing my kids ideas because I know its going to be messy. Why can't I get over it already?
This is a great post! I love the part about how they are having their own little life experiences. That made me happy because I guess we forget that.
Sometimes I do wonder if your boys ever wear clothes :)-just kidding-when we see them they are wearing clothes :)!!
I love this post. It really brought a smile to my face, Thank You! -Nancy
